Learning objectives

YOUR CHARTER

Full charter: required

Flexible charter: optional

Fast charter: not used

Learning objectives (LOs) describe discrete tasks that the learner must do, or facts the learner must know, in order to practice a skill. The process for writing LOs is very similar to the process for skills.

With your curriculum outline drafted, you have some choices as you approach LOs:

  • Break down skills into LOs, and fill them into your curriculum outline where they are covered.
  • Break down the activities in your curriculum outline into discrete tasks that become your LOs, and then assign the LOs to the skills they belong to.
  • Use a combination of both of the above approaches.

Whatever your approach, you might change your curriculum outline as you go — that's fine!

Fill out the learning objectives column of the curriculum outline that apply to each step.

Learning objective verbs

LO verbs describe abilities that the learner either has or doesn’t have. LOs do not require judgment or problem-solving. LOs are also observable behaviors that, if training were given in a classroom, an instructor could ask a learner to demonstrate. (In other words, we don’t use the common fallback verb “Understand.”)

Here are common LO verbs (you’re not limited to these):
